Team for Man Utd
Kouyate presumably out injured?

I'm wondering if Sam will be wise enough to play 3 centre backs in a 5? It's what I'd do up against a free flowing attacking team with Van Persie, Rooney and Falcao. I think 3 CBs could be a wall that Rooney isn't good enough to play his way through and is essential to try to stifle them and give us a base to hit them on the break.

So my team would be

Adrian

Tomkins Collins Reid

Jenkinson Noble Song Cresswell

Downing

Sakho Valencia

With Downing being asked to drop deeper when needed and Valencia given license to roam and play either flank and joining Sakho when able.

I'd rather see us match up like for like against Man United.

I believe they're playing a diamond midfield at the moment? (I could be wrong I didn't see their game yesterday) I think if we had just Noble, Song and Downing in there the extra man in the midfield may get too much space and hurt us.

If we go like for like, limit their options attack-wise, we could do well because we will get chances against their ropey defence

Same as saturday, assuming everyone is fit and well.

Same again if we can!

Let's go and attack them, our best chance of winning in my opinion.

It could be another goal fest (for both teams).

Poyet for Kouyate for me if he's not fit, more like for like than bringing in Zarate

Re: Team for Man Utd
Three CBs may be OK of at least one of them is a bit of ball player but ours are not. Also their strength is in the air and may not collectively be the best at players running at them at speed with quick inter-passing. Better to cut off supply in the midfield.

Re: Team for Man Utd
I'd be happy to keep Amalfitano on the bench in favour of a more defensive replacement for Kouyate (if he isn't fit). I think starting Downing and Amalfitano in a diamond is a bit risky away from home against Di Maria and Rooney and arguably Herrera.

IMO, restrict and frustrate them for 65-70 mins (with of course our threat on the counter attack), and if it's still level then bring on the likes of Amalfitano or even Zarate to try and win the game in the last twenty.

thats BFS problem, we gotta go for this from the off surely?

Re: Team for Man Utd
but thats why its a back 5. when under pressure the 2 wing backs drop back and the CBs close up. I think Cresswell is the perfect wing back personally. but the wing backs can also hunt down in the midfield.

And surely no one thinks Downing AND Morgan start. I'd suggest Downing tries to play the fron of the diamind when he can but Morgan might take his place late on when he's put a shift in.

If Kouyate is fit I would argue that keeping the same starting 11 would be going for it if they start with the same energy and intensity as on saturday. But if not bringing in Amalfitano would change the balance of the midfield. Of course, they may not be able to cope with that and we might run riot, but it seems unbalanced as a diamond and is a bit risky.

I think bringing in a more defensive player (most likely Poyet) away from home seems a better bet to me, as on the break Sakho and Valencia will make/create chances, and a midfield of Noble, Song, Poyet, Downing will create chances in general anyway.

Re: Team for Man Utd
I'd start Demel ahead of Jenkinson.

Rojo looked very 'get-at-able' against Leicester and if he is moved to the middle it will be Shaw's league debut with all the nerves that might bring.

I'd get right down their throats and with MU playing quite narrow I am less scared about Demel's defending.

As far as the three at the back question I'd be very nervous about starting Ginge he is a red card waiting to happen against Di Maria's change of pace.

Keep the front 3 quiet and we should win

daily : not sure about giving inexperienced 19 year old his prem league debut away at old trafford. he didnt make the bench on sat .amalfitano is experienced and has played at old trafford scored a great goal and played very well there last season

I'd agree that giving him his first Prem league start away at OT isn't ideal, but looking through the squad I'm not sure of a better fit in there defensively.

Amalfitano is undoubtedly more experienced, but I think him and Downing starting would be too top heavy, and playing Downing potentially deeper may be restricting our form player at the moment.

I think Amalfitano is a fantastic option to bring off the bench for the time being, whilst giving Poyet invaluable experience at a massive ground around other experienced players to guide him.
